Well it looks like I jumped the gun last week with my post about ballet documentaries to watch over the summer, because there is a new ballet documentary on the horizon. And it looks like a good one!
Tiler Peck, one of New York City Ballet's principal dancers, is the star of a new documentary film that chronicles her curation of the BalletNOW program last summer in California. She was the youngest female in history to curate a program for this ballet festival.
Tiler has stated that this documentary film, Ballet Now, shows her "most exhausted, honest self." She was juggling three different hats during the festival including director, producer, and dancer. At one point she would be in the audience watching and correcting others, and then immediately after she would jump backstage and throw on a tutu.
This documentary also has some real celebrity power behind it. The director is Steven Cantor, who is no stranger to a ballet film. He also directed Sergei Polunin's film, Dancer. Elizabeth Moss, currently famous for her role in the Handmaid's Tale, is one of the executive producers along with Paul G. Allen. Elizabeth and Tiler actually have something in common, they are both alumni of the Westside School of Ballet in Santa Monica. According to Tiler Peck, Moss was excited to help with the project because she wants to bring ballet more into the mainstream.
I wonder if Elizabeth's connections are what brought the film to Hulu? Yes, you heard me right. The film will be accessible to everybody with a Hulu account. So you don't even have to pay the admission price at a theater, you can watch it one summer night on your couch.
Ballet Now is available on Hulu starting July 20th. If you can't wait until then you can also click this link for the preview.
